第160回 (21) You are too young to understand such things. の復習

　札幌の雪まつりに行きました。

 

 

 

196.  ローマ人はその当時知られていただけの全世界を征服したけれでも、その征服した民族から有益なる課業を学ぶ事を恥としなかった。
【註】 were masters of...... 「 ......の主になった」では「.....…を征服した」 という事。 類例:- Hideyoshi made himself master of the Empire. (秀吉が天下を取った)。 as then known「その当時知られていただけの」。 were not too proud to learn = were not ashamed of learning.  類例 :— He is too proud to ask questions = he is ashamed of asking questions.  (彼は自尊心が強くて質問せぬ = 質問する事を延している)

 

Notの位置が問題になった。

基本文（b） He is  too wise  not to know it. 

　　　　　　　彼はそれを知らないほど馬鹿ではない。 

　notがなければどうなるか？

　 He is  too wise  to know it. 　

　　彼はあまりにも賢すぎるので、それを知ることが出来ない。

　notがあると

　He is  too wise  not to know it. 　

　　彼はあまりにも賢すぎるのでそれを知ることができる。

　ちょっと変な日本語だ。

　　それで、本のような訳になる。 彼はそれを知らないほど馬鹿ではない。 

196はどうか。notの位置が違う。

　They were not too proud to learn useful lessons.

 

notがなければ

　 They were too proud to learn useful lessons.

　　彼らはあまりにもプライドが高いので、役に立つ教えを学ぶことが出来ない。 

notはこの文章全体の意味を否定していると考える。

　すると上記の訳のようになる

　難しいところである。
